Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination Advice for all Year 13 Students, 2017/18 Academic Year

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a school we have received the following guidance from North Somerset Council's Health Improvement Specialist. Please can you take a moment to read this and refer to this link for further detail:

"We are writing to ask for your support in encouraging all year 13 students to go to their GP surgery for vaccination to protect them against meningococcal W disease. Meningococcal disease is a rare but life-threatening disease that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Both diseases are very serious and can kill.

Many students will have received meningococcal C vaccination in year 9 or 10 but will not have received protection against meningococcal W disease. It is very important that students receive vaccination, as young people are most at risk. It is being offered in response to a rapidly growing increase in cases of a highly aggressive strain of meningococcal W. The vaccine also protects against three other meningococcal groups too – A, C and Y.

Thank you in advance for your continued support, we appreciate that Year 13 is a very busy year for students and staff.

Fiona Miles, Health Improvement Specialist Health Protection
